Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about our services, document submission, and working with an Enrolled Agent.
What is an Enrolled Agent (EA)?
An Enrolled Agent is a federally licensed tax practitioner authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS. EAs must pass a comprehensive exam or have IRS experience and complete continuing education. Kevin A. Gutierrez, EA, is the founder of KG Tax Group.
What documents should I bring for tax preparation?
At minimum: photo ID, Social Security cards for all dependents, W-2s, 1099s, 1098s (mortgage interest), documentation for deductions and credits, prior-year return, and bank routing info for direct deposit. Business clients should also provide P&L, balance sheet, and asset purchase records. We will send a tailored checklist after you schedule.
How do I securely send my tax documents?
Use our SmartVault client portal — never send Social Security numbers or full tax documents via regular email. New clients will receive portal access after scheduling a consultation. Visit our Client Hub for login instructions.
Do you work with clients outside the DMV area?
Yes. We serve clients nationwide through secure document exchange and video consultations. Our primary service area is the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region (DC, MD, VA), with a secondary office in the Alexandria, VA area.
Can you file an extension for me?
Yes. A federal extension (Form 4868) gives you additional time to file — but not to pay. Any tax owed is still due by the original deadline to avoid penalties and interest. We can help you estimate what you owe before extending.
I received a letter from the IRS. What should I do?
Do not ignore it. Contact us with the notice number and date shown on the letter. We will review it, explain what the IRS is requesting, and represent you if needed. The sooner you respond, the more options you typically have.
I owe back taxes. Can you help?
Yes — tax resolution is one of our core services. Options may include installment agreements, Offer in Compromise, Currently Not Collectible status, or penalty abatement depending on your situation. We will review your case confidentially before recommending a path forward.
How often should my business books be updated?
Most small businesses benefit from monthly bookkeeping at minimum. Quarterly may work for very simple operations, but monthly gives you timely financial insight and makes tax season smoother. We will recommend a cadence based on your transaction volume.
Should I be an LLC, S-Corp, or sole proprietor?
It depends on your income, liability exposure, number of owners, and long-term plans. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. We offer entity selection consulting to compare tax and legal implications — often in coordination with your attorney.
How are your fees structured?
Fees depend on complexity — a simple W-2 return differs from a multi-state business return or resolution case. We provide clear quotes after understanding your situation during a consultation. Contact us or schedule online to discuss.
